I encountered a patch failure while upgrading to Oracle 19.23. I received "Opatch session completed with warnings".

The error clearly indicates that the root cause is a missing "shrept.lst" file.

we found that shrept.lst file was missing and have rollback the patch using
$ opatch rollback -id <xxxxxx>

We copied the shrept.lst file from another environment, re-applied the patch using "opatch apply," and the process completed successfully without any issues.

1. Make sure you verify that ORACLE_HOME has owned by Oracle and Group and it has proper permissions…
chown -R oracle:dba /oracle/product/19.0.0.0/dbhome_1

2. Also verify the logs under oraInventory for any VERIFICATION_FAILED error messages. Make sure you fix all Oracle pre-requisites before you run runInstaller again. This should resolve many of the issues during the cloning.

Patching Oracle Database Platform using Opatch or MOPatch

When applying the Oracle patches, make sure you follow the processes pre-checks, patch execution and post checks.

In SAP environment, MOPatch is very helpful and it has bundle patchs (SBP). Using this tool we can install multiple patches at single run, it will automate the oracle patching processes. However, note that MOPatch internally calls OPatch to install patches.

Pre-checks

• Make sure you have enough space in $ORACLE_HOME file system
• Take a Tar or backup of $ORACLE_HOME

tar cvf - $ORACLE_HOME/12201 | gzip > 12201.101020.tar.gz

• Install latest Opatch and MOpatch (in case of SAP)

$ mv $ORACLE_HOME/OPatch $ORACLE_HOME/OPatch-pre-SBP_12201201020_101020
$ unzip -qd $ORACLE_HOME OPATCH12201P_2008-70001555.ZIP -x SIGNATURE.SMF
$ unzip -qd $ORACLE_HOME/sapbundle SAP12201P_2011-70001555.ZIP 'SBP_12201201020_101020/MOPatch/*'

• Backup the database and related files
• Shut down the databases, listeners, and other processes running from the Oracle Home, use the fuser OS command to check for stale SQL*Plus sessions: $SBPFUSER $ORACLE_HOME/bin/oracle
• Install the patch –

For SAP systems using MOPatch
env ORACLE_HOME=$ORACLE_HOME $ORACLE_HOME/MOPatch/mopatch.sh -v -s SAP12201P_2011-70001555.ZIP

You should see a message
MOPatch completed successfully
Overall Status : COMPLETE

For Other Oracle Systems using Opatch

Post-Checks

• Start the database and verify the database processes and logs. The logs should not have any error messages
• Run the post patch update steps for SAP system 

$ORACLE_HOME/sapbundle/catsbp

• Apply _FIX_CONTROL, EVENT parameters if required.

Where _FIX_CONTROL, initialization parameter will give control over specific features and bug fixes. However, it should be set under the direction of Oracle Corporation

Ex:- ALTER SYSTEM SET "_FIX_CONTROL"='4545454:ON','4547778:OFF',……. COMMENT='SAP_12201201020_101020' SCOPE=SPFILE;

Where EVENT, initialization parameter will be used to generate information in form of a trace file in the context of the event. The trace file is located in a directory specified by the parameter USER_DUMP_DEST

ALTER SYSTEM SET EVENT= '10027','10028', '10142' COMMENT='SAP_12201171017_101020' SCOPE=SPFILE;

• Restart the database and Take a backup
• Start the application and check the application

Increasing the "aio-max-nr" kernel limit as per the Oracle recommendation. I have set the value as

After investigation and troubleshooting I found below bugs

1. There is a unpublished bug related to Unified memory KGH related crashes/errors. After discussing with support come to know that particular fix was found on an internal note to already be included in Oracle 12.2.0.1

Bug 30053838 - LNX-20-ATP: HIT ORA-7445 [KGHFND_IN_FREE_LISTS] AND ORA-600 [KSM_PGA_UM_EXT_FREE:INVALID_EXT_MAGIC], INST CRASH

2. There is a published bug 24596874 and the fix fix for 24596874 is first included in 20.1.0 . Also in term patches may be available for earlier versions.

For bug 24596874 , users notice Memory corruption when CDB environment is setup with star schema on one PDB. Redaction policies enabled on tables/view of the schema and query workload executed with 50 concurrent sessions. Multiple ORA 600 [kghfrh:ds] were seen in the alert log.

So both of the above bugs are ruled out as unpublished bug already part of 12.2.0.1 and published bug is related to Star schema on PDB.

After further investigation with Oracle support found another unpublished Bug 30448845 : DATABASE HANG WITH SIGNATURE: 'PMON TIMER'<='PRIOR SPAWNER CLEAN UP'<='LATCH FREE'<='RELIABLE MESSAGE'

As per Oracle support, this is fixed in 18.1 but the fix is not easy to backports. Oracle suggest to update parameter _pmon_slaves_arr_size=0 as workaround in Oracle 12.2

Users cannot update internal oracle parameters directly in SPFILE, please follow the steps mentioned in the below blog post

VKTM started with pid=5, OS id=43832

After research found that parameter _high_priority_processes="VKTM" may help, but it is a internally parameter you cannot able to apply directly on SPFILE. I always raise a ticket with Oracle support to got the confirmation before making changes.

This issue has been reported in the internal bug - Bug 30664554 : ORA-00800: SOFT EXTERNAL ERROR, ARGUMENTS: [SET PRIORITY FAILED], [VKTM]
In order to update internal parameters on a DB using SPFILE you need to follow bellows steps.

1. Take a backup of SPFILE and PFILE to revert changes in case of any isuses.
2. Create PFILE from SPFILE
SQL> create pfile=’$ORACLE_HOME/dbs/initTESTDB.ora’ from spfile
3. Add/update the parameter in PFILE
4. Rename SPFILE and stop/start the DB to use PFILE that was created
5. Create SPFILE from PFILE
SQL> create SPFILE=’$ORACLE_HOME/dbs/spfileTESTDB.ora’ from pfile;
6. stop/start the DB to use SPFILE that was created
Now the changes are applied to SPFILE.

Note that every environment, errors, load, use cases are different, I would highly recommend users to open a ticket with Oracle support and get confirmation before making any changes to your databases.

ORA-00600: internal error code, arguments: [kkdlron-max-objid], [4254950911], [4254950914]

When the database reached maximum object id or if the new object id exceeds the limit you will see below error. This situation normally happen in Data ware house databases, especially with SAP BW using Oracle as database.

You will get the max object id by running below commands.

SQL> select max(object_id),max(DATA_OBJECT_ID) from dba_objects ;

I see 2 options here
1. Logically rebuild the DB - Permanent fix
2. Apply the patch 20529650 - workaround/temporary fix

The option 2 applying the patch will brings us the new limit 4293950911 (4254950911+39000000). But keep in mind that this new limit can reach quickly in BW systems. Note that the patch will give team some time but the permanent solution is to rebuilding the database.

You can use below query to estimate how much time you might have , but note that this is just an estimate only.

How to Apply Oracle Latest patch set, OJVM and security patch...etc

When planning for Oracle patches make sure all pre-requisites are met and required backups are in place. Please refer below link to find out the required patches for 11g and 12c.

Oracle 11g and 12c Latest Database or OJVM Patch Set Update or Release Update

Pre-requisites

1. Before you apply patch make sure you are using latest Opatch version.

$./opatch version
OPatch Version: 11.2.0.3.19
OPatch succeeded.

Downloaded the latest opatch for 12.2 version using the link - https://updates.oracle.com/ARULink/PatchDetails/process_form?patch_num=6880880

To apply latest Opatch follow the instructions

2. Download the required PSU or JVN or intern patch and unzip

3. Make sure there are no conflicts and run below script to find out the conflicts. If you see any conflicts the make sure you fix the reported conflicts.

$ opatch prereq CheckConflictAgainstOHWithDetail -ph ./

In case of any conflicts you will see the message like below

There are no patches that can be applied now.
Following patches have conflicts. Please contact Oracle Support and get the merged patch of the patches :xxxxxxx, xxxxxx

In case if there are no conflicts then you will see the message like below

Invoking prereq "checkconflictagainstohwithdetail"
Prereq” CheckConflictAgainstOHWithDetail” passed.
Opatch Succeeded.

4. Using the -report option to simulate the application of the interim patch or PSU

Using “-report” option with "opatch apply" to simulate the apply without updating any files. Using this option you no need to shutdown the databases and it can be up and running.

$ opatch apply -report
...
Skip patching component oracle.rdbms, 11.2.0.4.0 and its actions.
The actions are reported here, but are not performed.

ApplySession skipping inventory update.

7. Make sure you have taken TAR of the ORACLE_HOME, in case of any issues

tar -cvf oracle_home_12c.tar 12.2.0.1

Applying interim patch or PSU or JVM

1. Stop the databases and listener

Sqlplus / as sysdba
Shutdown immediate
$lsnrctl stop LISTENER

2. Make sure you are in the patch directory and run the below command to apply the patch

$cd <patch number>
$ORACLE_HOME/OPatch/opatch apply

3. Run post patch script against each database

Sqlplus /as sysdba
startup
@catbundle.sql psu apply
quit

Starting version 12.1 we need to use datapatch to complete post patch actions upon any 12c or later database restart. The datapatch contains the logic to identify if any post-patch SQL actions are pending.

Sqlplus / as sysdba
Startup upgrade

$ cd $ORACLE_HOME/Opatch
./datapatch -verbose

-verbose
Output additional information used for debugging

After datapatch restart the database.
Sqlplus / as sysdba
Shutdown immediate
startup

Post-verification:-
1. After patching check the inventory, to make sure patch has been updated or not

4. Verify the patch history using from dba_registry_history using below query

ORA-00060: deadlock resolved & ORA-12012: error on auto execute of job

We have recently upgraded a dataset to 12c and started receiving below errors in alert.log

After investigation found that there is a bug in 12.2 Release and Oracle working to it. You can refer below oracle support notes on this.

Oracle patch failed with “CheckActiveFilesAndExecutables” failed error

We are applying patch on Oracle 12c and we got Prerequisite check “CheckActiveFilesAndExecutables” failed error. By looking the error we can see that files are active and used by some active processes.

Find out the process that is active using below command

$ps –ef |grep 8631     

oracle     8631      1  0 Aug23 ?        00:02:22 /oracle/product/12.1.0.2/dbhome_1/bin/tnslsnr LISTENER_ORCL-inherit

Either you stop the processes or kill the process. Once the processes is stopped you can proceed with opatch again and it should be successful.

Note that after patch is successful check for “SEVERE” errors if any in the log file.

How to manage Oracle RAC?

Oracle Real Application cluster is a group of independent servers that collaborate as singe system and provides single system image for management and configuration. All tools and utilities provided by oracle to manage system can be used from one system. The clusterware and Database can be installed, configured and managed from single location.

Rolling PatchOracle supports rolling patches, but this requires that each node has a separate Oracle Home. The patches are applied one node at a time while other nodes are operational. Oracle cluster patches are applied in rolling fashion, so no downtime required.

OPatch failed with error code 73

If users copy the ORACLE_HOME from one system to another unix system, make sure you run the clone command. If not the ORACLE_HOME information will not be registered in the oraInventory.

Some times users may get below errors when they copy ORACLE_HOME, ORACLE Inventory from a different system. Note that the path and SID may not be same.

Inventory load failed... OPatch cannot load inventory for the given Oracle Home.

Possible causes are:
   Oracle Home dir. path does not exist in Central Inventory
   Oracle Home is a symbolic link
   Oracle Home inventory is corrupted
LsInventorySession failed: OracleHomeInventory gets null oracleHomeInfo

OPatch failed with error code 73

By running ORACLE_HOME "Clone" command will create new inventory (if missing) and also takes care of re-linking of libraries..etc

$ORACLE_HOME/oui/bin/runInstaller -clone ORACLE_HOME="/home/oracle/product/v11203" ORACLE_HOME_NAME="Ora11203_home1" ORACLE_BASE="/oracle" oracle.sysman.ccr:PRE_REQUISITE=true

Before you run above command make sure you have /etc/oraInst.loc file with inventory_loc and inst_group.

mopatch.sh: line 5682: dc: command not found

While applying SBP patch on ORACLE_HOME come across an issue an error and mopatch failed.

I see below error in log file.

I did some research on error “Reason: Cannot calculate” but didn’t find much in google or oracle support site. When I look into the error closely I see that “dc” command not found.

After investigation on "dc: command" I found that user will get this error if RPM missing at OS level. After installing “ bc-1.06.95-1.el6.x86_64” rpm the SBP patch went fine without any issue.

I have recently encountered below error when working with Hyperion planning.

Communication error with server. Callback failed for data entry page. 

Cause:
There was a problem in the software code in the jsp file: EnterData_Inner.jsp which is executed when opening a Planning web form.

Steps to reproduce the error
The issue can be reproduced at will with the following steps:
1. Log into Workspace and open a Planning application.
2. Open a form.
3. Get error above.
2. <Add step details>

Proposed Solution or workaround.
During the troubleshooting found that this was a Bug and it is fixed in “Patch Set Update: 11.1.2.1.102 Oracle Hyperion Planning, Fusion Edition” or “patch 14126387”.

Also issue this is fixed in PSU .600 patch, but you will have to apply patches other products as per-requisites.

ORA-02443: Cannot drop constraint - nonexistent constraint
ORA-04043: object <object-name> does not exist
ORA-29832: cannot drop or replace an indextype with dependent indexes
ORA-29844: duplicate operator name specified
ORA-14452: attempt to create, alter or drop an index on temporary table already in use
ORA-06512: at line <line number>. If this error follow any of above errors, then can be safely ignored.
ORA-01927: cannot REVOKE privileges you did not grant

2. On HP-UX Systems you might see below warnings while performing the relinking of oracle binary and these are ignorable warnings as per readme.txt

WARNING:OUI-67215:
OPatch found the word "failed" in the stderr of the make command.Please look at this stderr. You can re-run this make command.
cc: warning 487: Possibly incorrect message catalog.
total_lntt_bytes is 0, assuming size of .debug_lntt
Failed to mmap lntt temp file. 

After applying Oracle Patch set update 11.2.0.4.1 if you see below warning messages then you might have affected with another bug and refer below Metalink note for more info.

"Warning: odm_mkdir not found in ODM library"

 Bug 18180390 : AFTER APPLYING DBPSU 11.2.0.4.1 DB PROCESSES GET WARNING: ODM_MKDIR NOT FOUND
